What is the Transcendental Meditation technique?

Transcendental Meditation (also called TM) is an effortless technique that allows your ming to settle inward, beyond thinking, to experience pure awareness – the most silent and peaceful level of the mind, your innermost Self.

The technique is practiced for twenty minutes twice-daily, sitting comfortably with eyes closed. Simple, natural and easy to learn, it doesn’t require clearing your mind of thoughts or concentrating. It’s so effortless, within just a few minutes anyone can transcend or go beyond worries and agitation.

“It was exactly what I needed! The thing that blew me away the most about it was that it was the easiest thing I’ve ever done – not the easiest meditation, but the easiest thing I have ever learned. And I learn a lot of things, you know; that’s my job!”
Cameron Diaz

“The best thing I ever did in my life was to learn TM as an architectural student in 1973. I have benefitted in a multitude of ways from it’s simple, easy practice. In the morning, when I sit down to practise TM, it’s as if I receive a mental bath. Having more energy and clarity as a result of my TM practice, I am able to give and receive more, not only in my professional life, but in my personal life also.”
Peter Mullins, Architect

Why doctors recommend Transcendental Meditation to their patients (and how it can help you, too)

“The amazing thing about Transcendental Meditation is the very well established research showing the technique impacts things, that we didn’t think were changeable.”
Dr. Oz

“I encourage all my patients to practice Transcendental Meditation. Experience Shows and research confirms, that it is the best vaccine against stress-related conditions. Regular practice keeps you inwardly settled despite being surrounded by chaos.”
Dr. Donn Brennan (MRCGP), General Practitioner

With regular practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique, your tolerance of stress increases, allowing you to become less susceptible to it, almost like a stress vaccine.

Studies prove TM reduces PTSD and depression in war veterans

Sometimes, the results can be most dramatic with those who need it most. A recent study with US Iraq War veterans showed a 50% reduction in PTSD and depression after only 8 weeks of TM practice. Ref. The results were so impressive that CNN did a feature on it on US Veteran’s Day.

When stress is removed we experience improved mental health

Many war veterans have problems that go far deeper than most. If TM can help them, where other approaches have had limited success or failed, it holds the prospect for helping anyone.

In a study done in Vietnam war veterans, the TM group saw such significant reductions (in PTSD, anxiety, depression, insomnia, etc.) that, after only 3 months of practice, 70% of the war veterans required no further treatment. The control group that received standard psychotherapy showed no improvement. Ref.

How does TM provide so many different health benefits?

“Analysing a problem to find its solution is like trying to restore freshness to a leaf by treating the leaf itself, whereas the solution lies in watering the root.”
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

When the body rids itself of stress, the side effect is improved health, self confidence, creativity, and happiness.

Practicing Transcendental Meditation eliminates the effects of stress internally and psychologically. It is not a surface cure, it treats the root of the problem.

This results in:

a more balanced outlook

more energy

and a deeper appreciation of one’s surroundings.

“Transcendental Meditation has opened up a new world of good health and well-being for me. I am so much more in control of my life and realise that there is something I can do to reduce my stress levels and feel more relaxed. It is such a blessing — I am grateful to have found it.”
Aisling Byrne, Royal Academy of Music, Musician & Teacher

TM allows the mind and body to rest on a much deeper level than sleeping

  • Transcending has a far more profound effect than relaxation.
  • The mind goes into a state of complete inned silence.
  • This is completely natural and effortless.
  • We don’t try to make the mind silent, the mind will do it by itself.
  • When the mind transcends, the body spontaneously falls into a deep relaxation as well.
  • Relaxation far deeper than attained in deep sleep.

Ancient texts describe transcending as the highest human experience allowing full human development. Today, we can confirm TM benefits through modern science by measuring what happens in the body and the brain during TM.

We can actually see a state of rest much deeper than regular sleep and an increase in happiness measured by the increase in the happiness hormone.

The deep rest provided by TM allows our bodies to heal naturally

This graphs, from a Harvard Medical School research study, shows that, during TM, the body comes into a state of rest that is twice as deep as even the deepest rest during sleep. This can be objectively measured by monitoring oxygen consumption. More than 30 studies around the world have confirmed this deep rest during TM practice.

This deep rest activates the inner healing power in our own bodies. Relaxation means relaxing tensions. The body has a completely natural way to remove tensions that it accumulates. This is what happens during sleep, but the rest during sleep doesn’t always go deep enough to remove the more deeply-rooted, traumatic stresses. Transcending gives a level of rest that can help dissolve those deeper rooted stresses.

Transcending reduces stress causing an increase in our “happiness hormone”

Stress disturbs the normal functioning of the brain, causing, amongst other things, a decrease in the production of the “happiness hormone”, serotonin. A lack of serotonin influences not only our inner sense of happiness but is also associated with migraines, sleep disorders, anxiety, anger outbursts, Alzheimer’s, eating disorders, addictions and many others. One can try to influence serotonin artificially (as anti-depressants seem to do) but this only treats the symptoms, not the real problem.

The experience of transcending, on the other hand, activates the body’s own healing ability so that the brain can function normally. The result? A completely natural increase in serotonin production during the TM practice and, eventually, during the rest of the day. Ref.

“A year and a half ago my anxiety was so great, I barely felt like showing my face in public. Since I learned TM, anytime I leave the house, I feel a fearless sense of mastery of any social situation. TM has helped my self confidence by putting into perspective that all beings are worthwhile, including myself.”
Alex Ledford, College student, Greensboro, NC
“I’m a special ed teacher—the most stressful job in education. TM recharges and nourishes me physically, spiritually, and mentally. I end the day feeling as good as I started—enthusiastic, positive, and committed to what I do. TM allows me to fully engage.”
Robert Steve Martin, Teacher, Wilmington, NC
“Before TM, I felt a lot of anxiety about the future. I was restless and didn’t sleep well. Since starting TM, I’m much calmer and don’t concern myself as much with what is going to happen tomorrow. There’s an ease that wasn’t there before, and I sleep much better.”
Ivana Kurtz, School teacher and mother, Minneapolis, MN
